Overseen by the FFSA Academy as part of its high-level federal policy, the 2022 French F4 Championship is already shaping up to be a great year with its 24 drivers from 11 nationalities!
As usual, this competition with a strong international flavour will visit some of the most spectacular French circuits, with two stopovers in Spain and Belgium. While remaining the most affordable FIA-certified F4 Championship in Europe, it will continue to focus on training, detection, performance and safety, with the adoption of the new Mygale single-seater equipped with a halo. From 16th to 18th April, the famous Easter Cup will kick off this new edition of the French F4 Championship, which has trained several hundred drivers since its launch in 1993, such as Pierre Gasly, Jean-Eric Vergne and Théo Pourchaire.
Who will succeed Esteban Masson this season, who triumphed in 2021 at the end of an extremely competitive season? With 24 drivers brimming with ambition and the desire to build their reputations, it seems difficult to make any predictions. On the French side, many of them can boast of a fine career in karting, such as Pablo Sarrazin (son of the former F1 and LMP1 driver), Romain Andriolo, Enzo Peugeot, Elliott Vayron, Enzo Richer, all five of whom had the opportunity to race episodically in F4 last year, and Leny Réveillère or Louis Pelet. Alessandro Giusti (French F4 Junior Champion in 2021), Enzo Geraci and Pierre-Alexandre Provost will be among the repeaters to follow closely. Like the Franco-American Luciano Morano, who took part in two events of the Championship in 2021, Antoine Fernande and Edgar Pierre will be keen to show their talents.
A promising and very international team
No less than 12 foreign drivers have decided to place their confidence in the FFSA Academy for their debut in single-seater racing. Among them, two Japanese drivers from the Red Bull Junior Team: Yuto Nomura and Souta Arao. Winner of the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy at the end of 2020 and outgoing French vice-champion, Australian Hugh Barter will be one of the big favourites. He will be up against other young drivers from distant horizons, but attracted by the advantages of the F4 Academy, such as the Indian Amir Sayed, the Ecuadorian Mateo Villagomez, the Colombian Jeronimo Berrion and the Panamanian Valentino Mini.
The Belgian Lorens Lecertua, with his interesting international experience in karting, will certainly aim for the podium. The field will be completed by Andorran Pol Lopez, German Max Reis and Swiss Dario Cabanelas, last year’s F4 Junior vice-champion.
Organised as part of the prestigious and popular FFSA-GT series, the Easter Cup at Nogaro remains one of the great classics of the French motor sport calendar. The French F4 Championship has often started on the Béarn circuit which will be the case again this season! The Mygale Generation 2 carbon monocoque weighing 540 kg and approved for F4 by the FIA is ready to welcome the 24 academicians, who will all start on equal terms with sporting fairness guaranteed by the experts of the FFSA Academy.
The new single-seater is equipped with the halo, which corresponds to the safety standards published by the FIA. It is powered by the Renault turbo with direct injection and benefits from a solid partnership with the tyre manufacturer Pirelli.
On Friday, the drivers will enjoy several private test sessions, just before the official launch of the season. A 30-minute Free Practice session and a 25-minute Qualifying session make up the Saturday programme. The best lap for each driver will define the starting grid for Race 1 and the second best laps the grid for Race 3. Race 2 will start in the same order as the Qualifying Practice, with the positions of the top 10 being reversed.
All the lights are green, the 2022 French F4 Championship can start in the best conditions…
